Over 2,000 seniors in over a dozen Detroit apartment buildings are at risk of being displaced from their homes and communities over the next decade.

The Senior Housing Preservation-Detroit (SHP-D) Coalition was created to advocate on behalf of seniors to preserve existing low income apartments, to educate community leaders regarding the issues of displacement, and to promote the inclusion of low-income seniors in the vision for a greater Detroit. SHP-D supports inclusive development for all.

PRESERVATION + ADVOCACY

We work with public officials, research institutions, local media outlets, and the City of Detroit Preservation Partnership Team to spread awareness of the challenges facing low-income seniors who are at risk of displacement. This work has resulted in concrete policy changes and improved outcomes for seniors at risk of displacement.

HEALTH + WELLNESS

We are leading two primary collective action initiatives to improve senior health and wellness: a sustainable food distribution network for seniors, and coordinated wellness assessments that improve on-site care for seniors in aggregate housing. Seniors can also elect to receive regular wellness check from members of the coalition.

RESOURCE BLOG

Our blog showcases news articles, scholarly publications, joint statements, policy briefs and other resources written by or documenting the work of SHP-D members.
